Today’s news: invisible sharks and elephant seal harems

August 5, 2011

Here are some fascinating articles that the humans (and animals ) at Current Instincts are reading today. Did we miss something major? Let us know below or send us an email.

1. Glowing shark wears cloak of invisibility. There is a super magical rare shark living in the ocean. The splendid lantern shark not only glows in the dark, but the light creates a “cloak of invisibility.” The shark glows due to light emitting organs. Even though shark attacks are rare, we have to admit the thought of a glow-in-the-dark shark is pretty scary. (Discovery News)

2. Shell gets tentative approval to drill in Arctic. We hate to call out a man around his birthday but this is totally not cool. The Obama Administration has granted Shell conditional approval to conduct exploratory drilling in the Arctic Ocean. The move shows that Obama is totally cool with letting another disastrous oil spill happen. (NY Times)

3. Endangered whales dine at dangerous depths. Right whales are feeding close to the surface, putting themselves at risk of collision with boats. They seem to be following some of their favorite foods, and since they feed just below the surface, they’re hard to spot and therefore easy to bump into by mistake. (Discovery News)

Totally worth an hour and a half ride on the D train for.

4. Rare seagull lands at Coney Island. A typical  day at Coney Island can usually consist of some strange sights. But last week, people camped out to look for … a seagull. But not just any seagull, this was a gray-hooded gull who came all the way from Africa. The only official sighting of it was in 1998. (NY Times)

5. Feminist elephant seals take to the water. There are elephant seal harems. Just want to get that out in the open right away. And you know what? Female seals aren’t taking it anymore. Rather than get bullied into mating by the males, many females are heading out into the ocean to find mates. What’s the elephant seal equivalent of bra burning? (Discovery News)
