Today’s news: snakes on a train, cheetah cubs, and a miracle dog

June 1, 2011

Here are some fascinating articles that the humans (and animals ) at Current Instincts are reading today. Did we miss something major? Let us know below or send us an email.

1. It’s raining dogs — for realz. An 18 pound stray poodle was recently taken on the ride of her life when an eagle picked her up and quickly dropped her in British Columbia. But this is actually good news for the 6-year-old stray who was in pretty bad shape pre-flight. Thanks to the eagle, humans paid attention to her and now she’s on her way to a full recovery. And there’s currently a long list of people who want to give her a forever home. (MSNBC)

2. Reindeer see the world very differently than we do. Scientists have figured out why reindeer are the perfect animals to help Santa up in the North Pole. (Obviously we could not get through a story about reindeer without mentioning Santa). Ultraviolet lights — which are extremely harmful to human’s eyes — actually help reindeer see in the extreme arctic environment they call home. They can see UV lights and actually use it to find food and shelter. (Physorg)

I see you with my magic eyes!

3. Epidemic leaves 440 endangered antelopes dead. The Saiga antelope has become extremely endangered — they can now only be found in small parts of Russia and Kazakhstan. They face many threats, including a recent bacteria that is strong enough to wipe out entire herds at a time. Kazakh conservation officials are looking into the latest outbreak. Not so very nice. (Treehugger)

4. US keeps bluefin tuna off endangered list. While the bluefin tuna will be kept off endangered species lists in the U.S., they will still be listed as a “species at risk”, which will provide it some protection. Environmental groups claim the popularity of the tuna in Japan has led to overfishing and has driving levels to dangerously low levels. International quotas on bluefin tuna fishing will still be in effect. (Yahoo News)

5. Snakes on a train — no don’t bring it! Passengers in Vietnam could have used Samuel L. Jackson recently when 4 bags of cobras were found on a train in Hanoi. The cobras were released into the wild. (MSNBC)

6. Bonus video because we like you. New cheetah cubs are now on display in Japan and they are ADORABLE.
