Today’s news: liger cubs are real, shark fin debate and more hero dogs

May 25, 2011

Here are some fascinating articles that the humans (and animals ) at Current Instincts are reading today. Did we miss something major? Let us know below or send us an email.

1. War dog adoption requests rise following bin Laden mission. By now, you’ve probably seen awesome pictures of the dog that was part of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Turns out, the raid was great publicity for all war dogs because requests for adopting retired combat dogs is on the rise. Let’s hope these animal heroes get good homes! (Huffington Post)

2. Dogs are cool drinkers too. We’ve already told you the cool way that cats drink their water. Never to be outdone by a cat, dogs have some pretty cool drinking methods too. Dogs can lift liquids into the air before swallowing just like cats can, making it appear like they’re defying the laws of gravity. May this revelation lead to another cat debate? (Discovery News)

3. California shark fin ban debate heats up. As a shark fin ban gets closer to becoming law in California, the debate is getting more intense. The bill would “make it unlawful for any person to possess, sell, offer for sale, trade, or distribute a shark fin,” and would go into effect in 2013. Opponents claim this bill unfairly targets the Chinese community which considers shark fin soup a delicacy. (Treehugger)

I'm real and I'm fantastic.

4. Liger cubs born in China. Did you know that ligers – big sick cats that are half tiger half lion – are real? We sure didn’t. But some new liger cubs born in China have proven us wrong. Lions and tigers can mate because they are members of the same genus, but we won’t know if the cubs will be able to reproduce until later. (Huffington Post)

5. New pointy-nosed bat found. A new species of bat with a funny nose and huge teeth has been discovered in the Caribbean. Apparently the bat is very large which tipped scientists off that he might be a new species. (Discovery News)

Love the military dogs story. I was so shocked that these war vets are often abandoned and killed. I hope Congress passes a law allowing for the dogs to be brought back to the U.S., that would increase their adoption chances, by decreasing costs for adopters. If we can take them there, we should bring them back.
