Obama administration to review 251 imperiled species

May 12, 2011

On Tuesday, the Obama administration announced that they will be reviewing more than 250 animals to determine if they need further protection.

This adorable Canada lynx is on the list. How could you not want to protect that face?

Interior Department officials say they will recommend that most of the species, which include a wide range of animals, 110 plants, and 38 kinds of mollusks, be moved to the threatened and endangered species lists. The movement of any of these species to either list could set up battles between states and industries. Conservation groups are already taking measures to avoid fights down the road.

Final decisions should be made by September of 2016. Deputy Secretary of the Interior, David Hayes, says “This plan will enable the endangered species program to function as it was originally intended. Priorities are being set by plaintiffs in courts, instead of by wildlife professionals.”

Let’s hope some endangered species get the protection they need. Because for some reason, the most awesome animals, seem to be the ones in the most danger.
