Animal rights activists look to block dog fighting app

April 26, 2011

A new Android app is causing a lot of controversy among animal rights activists. The game, “Dog Wars,” allows users to feed, train, and fight dogs on their phones. Change.org has started an online petition to get the game blocked.

Animal activists claim the app “makes a game out of dog fighting” and encourages cruelty towards animals. The makers of the game emphasize that it’s just a video game adding, “just because something is illegal in real life in certain countries, doesn’t mean it is illegal to make a song, movie or video game about it.”

We can kind of see both sides here. On the one hand, dog fighting is a serious animal cruelty issue and shouldn’t be taken lightly. On the other hand, it is just a game, and we trust people who play “Grand Theft Auto” to not think robbing cars and killing prostitutes is OK just because they can do so in a video game.

Either way, dog fighting is totally not cool so we wouldn’t be terribly upset if this app gets blocked. We would really love to know what you think of this issue so let us know in the comments. And if you’d like to sign your name to the petition, click here.

Completely opposed to this game, but with freedom of speech, we can’t tell them to stop it. We can get Google to take it down though, making it harder for people to play the game.

That freedom of speech is a tricky thing. I feel like if this gets banned, a lot of other apps would get banned as well. Even Angry Birds could be seen as animal abuse!

I’m with offthleashsd. People are free to play this game if they want – but the Android Marketplace doesn’t have to offer it.

It sounds like they took it down though?

We’ll have to see if there have been any updates on this. Haven’t found any yet but we will of course keep you posted!
