Today’s News: A cow that thinks she’s a horse, a bald eagle cam, and more

April 6, 2011

Here are some fascinating articles that the humans (and animals ) at Current Instincts are reading today. Did we miss something major? Let us know below or send us an email.

1. Thunderstorm wrecks Georgia animal shelter, but everyone survives The South was hit by a pretty brutal series of storms earlier this week – the current CI Atlantan can attest to his literal apartment-shaking intensity – and an animal shelter in North Georgia was destroyed. So that’s a total bummer. The good news? All 64 animals living there survived … Hooray! (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

2.  Bald eagles are winning While not as adorably cute as Zoo Atlanta’s popular Panda Cam, the live images of a bald eagle nest in Iowa are pretty amazing. According to the project’s website, there have been more than 10 million online views. Locals are calling it an “Internet sensation” that rivals even Charlie Sheen’s daily antics. (Discovery News)

3. There’s a cow in Germany who ‘thinks she’s a horse’ Two years ago, 15-year-old Regina Mayer’s parents didn’t buy her a horse. So she did what any resourceful teenager would do: She trained a cow that was born on her family’s farm to think and act like one. (MSNBC)

4. Two tons of elephant tusks seized in Thailand Last week, Thailand officials say they confiscated about 250 tusks in Bangkok, valued at more than $3 million.  As you can imagine, we’re all pretty disgusted at the Current Instincts offices right about now. (The New York Times)

5. A reunion with a Golden Retriever makes us all cry a little A U.S. soldier returning home from Afghanistan meets her dog Molly at the airport. There’s a video online. I think you know where this is going. (The Today Show)

I pushed for the cow-horse to appear in the newspaper I worked at and I also managed to get the eagle cam in both the paper and on the website. I love these animal stories. They’re a nice break from the sad realities we often see in the news. Keep up the good work!
