Here are some fascinating articles that the humans (and animals ) at Current Instincts are reading today. Did we miss something major? Let us know below or send us an email.

1. After tsunami, Japan’s animal rescue attempts increase According to the Wall Street Journal, there are still an estimated 30,000 animals stranded in Japan after the March 11 tsunami. Fortunately, a coalition of non-profits, pet stores and even international organizations have stepped in to help. (WSJ)

2. Deadly cobra escapes New York’s Bronx Zoo This past weekend, it was reported that a venomous Egyptian cobra is “missing” from the Bronx Zoo. Though everyone is confident that it’s likely somewhere within the Reptile House, CNN helpfully informs us that “venom is so deadly that it can kill a full-grown elephant in three hours.” Uh, stay away from the Bronx for awhile, Susan. (CNN)

3. There was a shootout in Mississippi over dog poop A 60-year-old Mississippi man has been charged with assault after shooting another man he accused of allowing his dog to take a poo on his lawn. Luckily – and somewhat surprisingly – neither man was seriously hurt. We all know the No. 1 unspoken rule of pet owner etiquette requires that you pick up after your dog, but this is a wee bit excessive. (BBC News)

4. A longtime flea mystery solved In your piece of “totally gross, but kind of fascinating” news of the day, researchers have discovered how fleas jump, after 45 years of apparently wondering about this information. (Discovery News)

5. Watch a video of twin polar bear cubs being adorable About a week after Knut’s sad, unexpected death, twin polar bear cubs Gregor and Aleut made their big debut in a German zoo by scampering around their enclosure, playfully chasing each other, and squealing with genuine joy. Oh wait, nope that squealing is actually coming from me. (The Telegraph)

I’m intrigued by the cobra story. I’m really curious why the zoo had this cobra to begin with. It is extremely dangerous and the snake wasn’t on display. So why have this snake any way?

    Oh, Mississippi. *shakes head*
