4. Ex-racehorses starve as charities fail to care for them. A major private organization dedicated to caring for former racehorses hasn’t been doing its job, leaving thousands of horses starved and neglected in Saratoga Spring, NY. (

5. Atlantic oil spill threatens endangered penguins. Thousands of endangered penguins have been coated with oil after a cargo ship broke up on a remote British South Atlantic territory. (MSNBC)

    I was so sad to hear about Knut. I wondered if it wasn’t a congenital thing. I’ve heard that most animals abandoned by their mothers at birth have something wrong with them. It’ll be interesting to hear the rest of the necropsy results.
