March 21, 2011

Here are some fascinating articles that the humans (and animals ) at Current Instincts are reading today. Did we miss something major? Let us know below or send us an email.

1. With jaguars disappearing, a hunt for survivors. Jaguars used to roam from the Southern U.S. all the way down to Argentina but they’re quickly disappearing. A new organization, Yaguará, has been created in Costa Rica in Panama to help study and protect jaguars and other big mammals in danger in the area. (Discovery News)

2. Adult macaques can recognize their friends in photos. A new study shows that macaques can recognize their families and friends in photographs. When macaques were shown a picture of a monkey they knew, they quickly continued on to another photo, but if they didn’t know the monkey they would give him the ole stink eye. (Treehugger)

3. Shark cleaning stations identified. Scientists have identified ocean cleaning stations, where sharks and rays line up to get cleaned by smaller fish. The study explains why sharks sometimes go into shallow waters. The smaller fish clean the sharks fins by eating dead skin and parasites. Yum. (Discovery News)

4. Little penguins being abducted and turned into pets. Being adorable does have it’s downfalls. Little Penguins in Southern Australia are being abducted from protected areas at night, presumably to be turned into pets. Confession: We’re crying a little. (Treehugger)

5. Betty White helps out Genesis Awards. Betty White, well known for her love of animals, hosted the Genesis Awards on Saturday which recognizes people in entertainment media who raise awareness about animal issues. One of our other favorite people also won: Stephen Colbert was recognized for satirizing bullfighters. (USA Today)
