According to officials at the Berlin Zoo, Knut, the internationally-known polar bear who was raised in captivity when his mother abandoned him, died suddenly on Saturday. He was 4 years old.

Knut’s death came as a surprise to the zoo’s bear keeper, who told the Associated Press, “it was a completely normal day,” until he went into the water of his enclosure and stopped moving. According to a report, about 600-700 zoo visitors witnessed what happened.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death will be performed on Monday, officials said.

I was fortunate enough to see Knut during a trip to the Berlin Zoo in 2009. As an animal lover, this is incredibly sad.
