Today’s news: mass extinctions, lions, and a shy leopard

March 4, 2011

Here are some fascinating articles that the humans (and animals ) at Current Instincts are reading today. Did we miss something major? Let us know below or send us an email.

1. World’s sixth mass extinction may be underway. During Earth’s illustrious history there have been 5 mass extinctions that wiped out 75% of all species. We may now be in our 6th mass extinctions. However this time, humans are to blame. Until mankind’s expansion about 500 years ago, mammal extinctions were extremely rare. (Discovery News)

See how much cooler these guys are when they're alive AMERICANS?

2. African lions under threat from American hunters. In America’s continuing quest to be #1 at all the wrong things, American hunters are now a major threat to African lions. Over the last 10 years, two-thirds of the lions hunted for sport were brought to America. Demand in lions as trophies and lion skin rugs has risen dramatically, putting lions in peril. (The Guardian)

3. Eastern cougar declared extinct in U.S. Sorry for all the Debbie Downer posts on a Friday, but we don’t make the animal news! Some biologists have argued that the cougar has been extinct in the U.S. for at least a hundred years but have only now officially declared the big cats extinct. The report has stirred up some controversy with people claiming they’ve seen cougars within that time frame, however biologists say those are western cougars. (Treehugger)

4. Sharks can zero in on a target 31 miles away. Tiger and thresher sharks can both cut direct paths to specific targets up to 31 miles away. So they’re not just zooming around willy-nilly, they know exactly how to find you. (Discovery News)

5. Elusive leopard filmed for the first time ever. A couple weeks ago, researchers discovered a new species of cat living in Indonesia. Now the extremely shy Sundaland clouded leopard has been caught on tape. The video is short, but you get a great view of this guys beautiful markings.

Lions are so majestic, why would anyone want to kill one? It’s really disgusting. I recently read a story of a local who went to Africa to hunt an elephant. He succeeded and was boasting of his kill. It made me sick. Leaves this beautiful animals alone. To kill an innocent living thing so you can hang its head on your wall doesn’t make you a stud hunter, it makes you a disgusting piece of crap.

It really doesn’t make any sense to us either! What are they trying to prove? Next time they should go out there without their weapons and THEN we’ll see who wins.
