Today’s news: stray dogs to stay in Moscow and an awesome rhino video

March 2, 2011

Here are some fascinating articles that the humans (and animals ) at Current Instincts are reading today. Did we miss something major? Let us know below or send us an email.

1. Moscow drops plan to deport stray dogs. City officials in Moscow have scrapped a plan to move all stray dogs in the city to a camp outside town. Animal activists were adamantly opposed to the plan because they claimed it would place them in an area where disease would run rampant. There are an estimated 26,000 stray dogs in the city. (MSNBC)

We think this guy is filled with Tiger blood. (That makes no sense, we just love Charlie Sheen's rants.)

2. Finning fears in shark diving capital. The Bahamas are the most popular place for shark diving in the world — mainly because of the strict laws they have against long-lining. However, a shark finning operation is interested in opening up in the Bahamas. The proposal “lending urgency to a government proposal to ban commercial shark fishing and the import and export of shark products.” (Discovery News)

3. Half of world’s turtles in danger of extinction. A new report says that more than half of the 328 turtle and tortoise species are threatened with extinction. This makes them the most threatened invertebrates on the planet. The most threatened species if the Pinta Island Tortoise from the Galapagos Islands. (Yale Environment 360)

4. Wolves know based on looks where something is hiding. Wolves are smart enough to know to follow a human’s gaze to figure out where something is hiding. Only a few other animals are known to do this, such as chimpanzees and ravens. Let’s hope wolves, chimps, and ravens don’t team up to become our new overlords. (Discovery News)

5. Camera traps capture rare rhino mom and child. Cameras set up in Ujung Kulon National Park recently caught this amazing footage of a Javan Rhino with her baby. (Treehugger)

Ugghhh, that’s so sad about the turtles. The adorable baby rhino cheered me up though. They are such incredible creatures!

I had no idea there was such a stray dog problem in Moscow. I’ve heard of other countries that have taken feral dogs and cats and poisoned them or shot them in mass kill offs. It’s good to see that at least for now, these dogs will be OK.
