Today’s news: Detroit is delusional, frogs offer hope in Haiti, and a cat gives birth to a dog

January 14, 2011

Here are some fascinating articles — and one crazy video — that the humans (and animals) at Current Instincts are reading and watching today. Did we miss something major? Let us know below or send us an email.

1. Detroit says NO to a show about stray dogs in the city. The Discovery Channel wants to film a reality show in Detroit that explores how the city’s stray dogs work together to survive. It’s a super interesting concept — there’s even talk of putting cameras on the dogs’ collars to get their point of view — but sadly, it may not happen. The city is 100 percent against the idea because they’re afraid of being portrayed in a negative light. We hate to break it to you, Detroit, but most people are well aware you guys are in rough shape. (Detroit Free Press)

2. Tagging penguins is a bad idea. We greedy humans want to know everything about everything, but as is often the case, our quest for knowledge comes at the expense of others. A decade-long study in Antarctica reveals that penguins who have been tagged with a band on their flippers live shorter lives and have breeding problems. Apparently, the bands hinder the birds’ ability to swim quickly.  (The Guardian)

3. Blessing of the Pet day in St. Michel. Oh, Canada. You’re so swell! To commemorate St. Antonio D’Abate, the patron saint of domestic animals (for realz!), a church in Montreal is holding a blessing-of-the-pets event this Sunday. More than 300 people and 40 pets — dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. — are expected to attend. (Montreal Gazette)

I'll get you my, pretty, and your little fishies, too!

4. Jellyfish are taking over the ocean. There are more jellyfish in the world than ever before and this could be bad news since more jellyfish means less other fish, which would completely freak out the world’s ecosystem. Yup, jellyfish are that badass. (Environment 360)

5. Froggy finds raise hope for Haiti. Conservationists have rediscovered six species of frogs in Haiti, which is a small glimmer of light for a country that’s been stricken with so much darkness. And while obviously the country has much more pressing needs, Robin Moore, an amphibian expert with Conservation International said it perfectly: “A common assumption about Haiti is that there is nothing left to save … That is not entirely true. There are biologically rich pockets of environmental health and natural wealth in Haiti.” (MSNBC)

6. Cat gives birth to a dog. WTF?!  (Discovery News)

Seriously! It would’ve been so interesting and probably would’ve motivated people to help the poor guys!
