Today’s news: Siberian tiger kills bus driver and beavers are awesome

January 7, 2011

Here are some fascinating articles (and one video) that the humans (and animals) at Current Instincts are reading today. Did we miss something major? Let us know below or send us an email.

1. Siberian tiger kills bus driver as tourists watch. A tour bus driver was dragged into the forest and killed by a rare Siberian tiger when he got out to check his bus. The bus was visiting a breeding center in Beijing, and the driver was breaking protocol when he left the bus. You should all know by now that we’re obsessed with tigers here at Current Instincts, we just wish they felt the same way about us. (MSNBC)

Don't mind me. I'm just fixing all of your mistakes. Again.

2. Leave it to beavers to restore rivers. Just call it beavers being beavers. When beavers act how they’re supposed to act, it helps restore degraded rivers. When beavers make their dams it creates ponds and stops up single channel waterways which can fix damaged rivers. It’s less costly and more effective than human intervention. (Discovery news)

3. DeKalb man convicted in dog fighting ring. Two men in the Atlanta area have been convicted of multiple animal cruelty charges and will serve time in jail. Derrick Montez Daniels and Billy Taylor Jr. were each convicted on 26 misdemeanor charges related to their involvement in a dog fighting ring. (AJC.com)

4. Christmas trees become lake habitats for fish. Lakes around the country get unused Christmas trees tossed into them every year – and they become great homes for fish and algae. Every year a new lake is selected. Volunteers secure the trees and place them at the bottom of the lake where they quickly get overrun by all kinds of water creatures. (NYTimes)

5. Turtle’s epic journeys documented. While turtles can live to be super old, their lives aren’t necessarily easy. Tracking devices placed on leatherback turtles shows that some travel almost 5,000 miles in a single trip! The researchers were able to pinpoint the turtle’s migratory routes and more. (Discovery News)

6. Watch this puppy parade. Just do it.
