Today’s news from the animal kingdom: hybrid polar bears and glowing snails

Straight chillen.

1. Hybrid polar-grizzly bear a sign of Arctic’s future? Its been determined that a not-quite-right looking polar bear that was killed by a hunter in 2006 is a polar bear – grizzly bear hybrid. Apparently grizzlies are moving farther north into polar bear territory due to melting Arctic sea ice. (MSNBC)

2. Dancing bird shakes its groove thing. The male bird of paradise really knows how to get down. They create their own disco-esque show with vibrant colors that haven’t been duplicated by man. The feathers reflect light in all directions at once. (Discovery News)

3. Kroger recalls pet food in 19 states. The pet food company is recalling certain bags of Pet Pride Cat Food, Pet Pride Tasty Blend Poultry & Seafood Cat Food, Pet Pride Kitten Formula Food, Old Yeller Chunk Dog Food, Kroger Value Cat Food, Kroger Value Chunk Dog Food. The products carry expiration dates of Oct. 23 and 24, 2011. The recall was issued because they may pose a health risk to pets. So double check what you’re feeding your pets! (MSNBC)

4. Glowing snails are weird. Tiny marine snails emit a green glow to scare off predators, according to a new study. The snails, who live along rocky coastlines, scatter light in all directions to create the effect. (MSNBC)

5. Humans are destroying vultures. Environmental changes caused by humans can lead to animal evolution in much shorter time periods than normal. Egyptian Vultures on the Canary Islands provide evidence of this. Human expansion has caused the vultures to move and evolved into a genetically distinct sub-species. (Discovery News)
