Today’s news from the animal kingdom: Animal babies, Harry Potter, and embarrassing news for ocean’s first predator

November 5, 2010

Here are six fascinating articles that the humans (and animals) at Current Instincts are reading today. Did we miss something major? Let us know below or send us an email.

1. A new addition to the animal kingdom:  Lun Lun, a panda at Zoo Atlanta, gave birth to her third cub — and the first baby panda born in the U.S. in 2010 — Thursday morning. The little guy (or gal) is the size of a cellphone and still all pink and hairless.  Zookeepers haven’t had a chance to examine the baby as mom isn’t letting anyone near her just yet, but they said the family looks like they’re doing well. (LiveScience)

2. More births: Over in Boston’s Franklin Park Zoo, Kiki the gorilla gave birth to her third child on Wednesday morning. Zoo officials said, “Kiki appeared very calm and relaxed and was doing everything a gorilla mother should.’’  The zoo is holding contest to name the newborn. (

3. Do animals get morning sickness?:  While many pregnant animals do exhibit similar symptoms as pregnant humans, like an aversion to certain foods, they don’t suffer from a.m. nausea and vomiting  — although scientist admit they need to do more research on topic. (

4. Harry Potter fans threaten India’s owls: Parents with money to waste are apparently buying owls for their Harry Potter-obsessed children. OK, we get that moms and dads wanting to be hip give their kids cool things, but an owl? That’s just ridiculous. Your kid is not — and never will be — Harry Potter. So stop being selfish and just get him a dog or a goldfish and call it a day. (

5. Giant predator looked tough but was actually a wuss: For years and years, scientists assumed that Anomalocaris canadensis — a giant shrimp-like creature that lived about 500 million years ago — was Earth’s first great predator — the original ocean bully. But it turns out, he was kind of a big wimp. Sure, he had a massive, badass looking jaw but it was super weak and the only things he could eat were mushy  worms. Too bad for that dude.  (National Geographic)

6. Tourist killed by lions while showering: Yikes! A man vacationing at a resort in Zimbabwe was attacked and killed by a pride of lions. Apparently lions in the area have to compete with humans for food so they hate us. We guess the lesson here is don’t shower anywhere that big, sick cats roam. (
