Today’s news from the animal kingdom: whales with tusks, virgin wasps, and puppies!

  1. Puppies! A ballot referendum in Missouri aims to place tougher regulations on businesses who raise and sell dogs. Animal rights organizations are concerned about animal treatment, and business owners say they’re sniffing around where their noses don’t belong. Discuss! (The New York Times)
  2. Elephants Are So Hot Right Now In India, police arrested five people in connection with an elephant smuggling ring today; the animals are revered in the country as “status symbols.” The practice is understandably illegal. (MSNBC)
  3. A Gross Story about Wasp Sex Did you know that during intercourse, male wasps will “snap off one of his two genitalia” inside a female – on purpose, no less! –  in order to prevent her from having sex with other wasps? There must be a less painful sounding way to ensure monogamy. Apparently, male wasps prefer virgins because it increases their chances of reproduction. This just in: Wasps – they’re really creepy!   4. Chimps: They’re Just Like Us! According to a new study, chimpanzees are more likely to be right-handed. Humans also share that trait. (Discovery News)
  5. Some ‘Unicorn’ Whales Act As Thermometers A recent study published by researchers from the University of Washington revealed that they tagged 14 adult narwhals – distinctive because of their protruding tusks that resemble unicorn horns – with sensors that recorded temperatures in the Arctic Ocean.  One researcher dubbed them very effective “biological oceanographers.” (Discovery News)
