In defense of “bunny” costumes

Mean Girls

Left to right: Hey look, it's a "cat," "bunny," and "mouse."

As “Mean Girls” artfully taught us, Halloween is a great opportunity to show off a little – or a lot – of skin. Given the influx of gladiators each year paying homage to Gerald Butler’s abs in “300,” we know this idea doesn’t simply ring true for women.

Now, some very prude people will tell you that they disapprove of such overt sex appeal being lobbed at our nation’s youngsters during an evening of wholesome trick or treating.  But I stand in defense of seeing my friends dress as skimpily as possible, because hey, unless you’re Madonna, there is no other time you’re going to get away with wearing lingerie as outerwear and a pair of bunny ears in public.

Personally, I think it’s a fabulous way to honor the animal kingdom, because cats, for example, are rarely thought of as sexy. In reality, owning too many cats has a very negative connotation and brings up depressing images of spinsterhood and dying alone in a decrepit apartment with only your pets for comfort. I think we can all agree that dying alone is not the least bit sexy.

So if you’re still searching for a Halloween costume this year, my advice is to go with the tried-and-true formula of “less is more.” Impress fellow party-goers with both your love of animals – and your confidence.
