Today’s news from the animal kingdom: Wild chimp wreaks havoc in Kansas City

October 20, 2010

Here are five fascinating articles that the humans (and animals) at Current Instincts are reading today. Did we miss something major? Let us know below or send us an email.

  1. 300 pound chimp runs amok
When you hear Kansas City, “wild chimp” is usually the last thing to come to your mind. Well yesterday a chimp was the main story in one Kansas City neighborhood. The 13-year-old chimp named Sue caused havoc downtown for about 40 minutes before she went back into her cage of her own accord. Read the full story on MSNBC.
  2. Wolverine to get root canal
Hughie, a wolverine at a zoo in Winnipeg, may be getting four root canals. The senior veterinarian at the zoo thinks the 11-year-old wolverine may have been suffering from a vicious toothache for months. Read the full story on the Vancouver Sun.
  3. Animals chomp on pumpkins for a cuteness overload
Animals at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans were given pumpkins to play with, and inevitably eat, much to the delight of the crowd. Lioness Cassie got a special treat of a meat scented scarecrow attached to her jack-o-lantern. (Ok, so this isn’t really news but it’s too adorable to pass up.) See all the pictures on Nola.com.
  4. Why the leopard got its spots
They say a leopard can’t change its spots but that wasn’t always the case. A new study explains why big cats developed stripes, spots, or a solid coat. One researcher explains, “Spots are also more common in species that spend greater amounts of time moving in trees, and in those that are active at lower light levels.” Read the full story on Discovery News.
  5. Frog found in bag of frozen veggies
One couple got a big surprise during dinner. Marty and Tim Hoffman opened a bag of mixed vegetables to find a small frog. The Hoffman’s aren’t looking for any kind of compensation, they just want to make sure the next couple to open a bag of vegetables doesn’t find any surprises.
